241 years ago, a group of men, representing the will of the people, declared that they would no longer live under the rules of a tyrant. They asserted that from that time forward, they were free to make their own decision in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These founding fathers established a system that generated its power from the people, not large centralized monopolies, far away and unanswerable to the anyone.
Today this country and the world face a similar situation. Our energy, essential to every aspect of modern life is controlled by far away mega- utilities and corporations deciding what type of energy (often fossil fuels), where, when and for how much we pay for energy. Yet now as then, an independent system is taking hold. In it individuals decide how, where, when and for how much energy is produced.
Just like in 1776 local economies, are deciding by their own actions what type of goods and services (in this case renewable energy- solar & wind) and the overall costs to the consumer. More and more it is local grassroots movements becoming involved in local and state governments that are sparking the revolution to renewable energy independence.
The cost of solar panels has decreased 800% in 15 years. Storage costs in batteries have decreased 270% in the last 5 years. Both are projected to continue to decrease significantly as the economics of scale becomes more and more a factor here in the United States and globally. Additionally, over the past 10 years local cities, counties, and states are making it easier to buy, install and permit solar to individual consumers.
This has helped create a new industry of low interest financing through local lending institutions and banks and spurred the adoption of programs such as Y-Green to allow homeowners and businesses to find cost effective ways to revolutionize their individual energy independence. Here are a few stories to illustrate how this revolution is taking hold and why we say now is the time for you to look at your own energy autonomy.
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A bipartisan group of 235 mayors from across the country unanimously backed an ambitious commitment for U.S. cities to run entirely on renewable sources such as solar & wind by 2035.
“As mayor of Miami Beach, I am proud to support a vision of 100 percent clean energy for my community. Our vibrant, historic city will be a model for other communities around the world on the importance of addressing the threat of climate change. We have already taken steps to expand renewable energy and we will continue to improve our infrastructure and innovate clean energy solutions for a stronger Miami Beach,” said Mayor Philip Levine of Miami Beach, Florida.
And this revolution is global.
100% Renewable Energy
There’s been skepticism whether renewable energy can produce all our future energy needs. So, last week, a Chinese province went out of their way to show it was possible for the entire region to run solely on green energy. And it seems they did just that. For seven continuous days, over 5 million citizens living in the Qinghai Province in northwest China survived on 100 percent renewable energy, according to the State-run Xinhua News Agency. Qinghai’s power grid has a total installed capacity of 23.4 million kW, and a whopping 83.8 percent of that power currently comes from solar, wind and hydro power.
Not satisfied with those numbers, the province is continuing to improve their clean energy infrastructure. “Clean energy is the ultimate way. We need to reduce reliance on fossil fuel, improve our energy structure, and reduce carbon emissions,” Han Ti, vice general manager of Qinhai Electric Power Corporation, told Xinhua.
What is important is understanding the economics of the Renewable Energy Revolution.
More than 1 million US homes have solar systems installed on their rooftops. Batteries are set to join many of them, giving homeowners the ability to not only generate but also store their electricity on-site. And once that happens, customers can drastically reduce their reliance on the grid.
The energy autonomy shift, where homeowners generate and store 80% to 90% of their electricity on site and use the grid only as a backup, makes economic sense as early as 2020 according to consulting firm McKinsey.
By 2020, Greentech Media estimates, homes and businesses will have more battery storage for energy (841 megawatts of capacity) than utilities themselves.
Right now, this alternative energy shift is occurring at different rates all over the United States and World. Here in Florida E3Wise is leading the change to the solar energy revolution by providing proven solar generation and storage options to meet individual home owners and businesses needs to achieve energy autonomy.
